Renaissance Room

The Chanler is a beautifully restored inn located at the end of Newport’s Cliff Walk, which wanders along the sea behind Newport’s historic summer mansions. The inn features what is without doubt the best restaurant in Newport and views of the surf on the beach beneath it. We stayed in the Renaissance Room, pictured here, which opens onto a large deck from which we could lounge and enjoy the view. The one sour note, and it is a big one, is the price tag for all of this, but as a captain of industry who built one of Newport’s mansions said long ago to a prospective buyer of his yacht: “If you have to ask the price you can’t afford it.”
