Room 234
It is hard to conceive when you
visit Dubrovnik today that this fantastic city of orange-tiled
roofs and marble streets, whose centuries old walls rise high above
the clear, blue waters of the Dalmatian coast, was only recently
bombarded in the war between Serbia and Croatia that occurred on
the break up of what was once Yugoslavia. For the scene today
is entirely pacific, the damage from the war has been repaired,
and the city has become a center of tourism. Clearly
the hotel to stay in is the Excelsior. Only a short walk
from the “ old
town,” the hotel has dramatic views of the island of Lokram
just offshore and the ancient walled city itself. There are several
corner rooms with wonderful views; we stayed in Room 234, a large
suite that features floor to ceiling windows and a large balcony
from which we watched the sun setting over the walls of the "old
town.”
